Lamy · Fountain pen

Lamy 2000

Designed in 1966 and still in production. It's the pen that looks least like a fountain pen.

The case

  • Gerd A. Müller designed it, and he had worked at Braun before Lamy. It has been in production since 1966.
  • The body is fibreglass-reinforced resin and the fittings are matt brushed stainless steel. Nothing on it is decorative.
  • It fills from the bottle by a piston, with no cartridges to buy or run out of. The nib is 14-carat gold.

For

Someone who writes by hand every day and would never carry anything showy.

Skip if

They've never used a fountain pen and don't want bottled ink. It fills by piston, from a bottle.

Know before you give

Choose the nib with care. If we didn't know their handwriting, we'd pick fine (F). Add a bottle of ink, because the pen is no use without one. Buy from Lamy or a dealer you trust; it's a pen worth copying.

How we chose it

We built this from the maker's published specifications and documentation, checked on the date below. We haven't tested it in hand. Prices are the maker's list or a recent retailer price.
