Alessi · Philippe Starck · Design object

Juicy Salif

The most argued-about lemon squeezer ever made. Alessi calls it surprisingly functional. The argument is the gift.

The case

  • Philippe Starck sketched it on a pizzeria placemat in 1988. Alessi had commissioned a tray. It has been in production since 1990.
  • It's mirror-polished cast aluminium on three long legs, 29 cm tall. You set a glass underneath, and the juice runs down the ribs into it.
  • In Alessi's own words, it's unsurpassed at starting a discussion about what it is and what it means. That discussion comes in the box.

For

Someone with an eye for design who'll put it on a shelf and tell the story to everyone who asks.

Skip if

They want juice without a production. It has no strainer and no cup; you hold a glass underneath. Buy them a lever press instead.

Know before you give

Buy the polished aluminium one from Alessi or a retailer you trust. It's a much-copied object, and the copies are cheaper for a reason.

How we chose it
